This is a fun new painting that's on press this week. I can't wait to see how it turns out. Right now I'm busily painting some new pieces for an upcoming show at the 15th Street Gallery here in Salt Lake. The space is beautiful and the gallery is a great gathering space for talks and readings. Just down the street from the gallery is my favorite bookstore, The King's English. And it must be noted that directly across the street is the little bagel shop where I met my husband when we both worked there as teenagers. Needless to say, the spot is close to my heart.

The birds are really flying off the page!

I've been wanting to make 3D birds for a few years now and finally I decided the time had come to follow through. This paper mache fellow is still a work in progress. I'm trying to figure out how subtly or strongly I want the pattern to show. There are a few other birds awaiting paint.

I'm really having fun with this new medium. Next I'm thinking of branching off into something figurative, although I'll still keep some birdies around.

Pier One Birds

The birds are in! Well, they've been in for a few weeks now. I took the family on a little field trip to visit our nearest Pier One and there they were, cute little fellows, sitting amongst the other paintings. I've only seen these little birds in their small format so it was fun to see them on a larger scale. Pier One did a nice job presenting them. They're printed on a light cotton fabric and gallery stretched. Each one has a fun little tag describing the personality of the birds they depict.

I'd have to say that I'm filled with quite a little bit of glee myself after finding out that two of my paintings THAI SPICE I & II are being used on the set of the TV show GLEE. My paintings are hanging in the character Rachel's bedroom. I don't know how many episodes they've appeared in, but I'm certainly a convert to the show now. I can't wait to see when they appear next.

Work, Work, Work

It feels good to be back in the rhythm of painting again. I always like a good deadline (this must play to the procrastinator in me), and I certainly do have a lot of deadlines. I just finished this piece at the request of my publisher and I'm hoping that it finds a good home. Today I need to finish the companion and begin work on the landscapes that are due on the tenth for my show at Evergreen Gallery. I'm looking forward to the shows at the Himilayan Kitchen that Alpine Art has set up for later in the summer and I need to start thinking about new work for the Ogden City Arts Festival, which I've been asked to attend as an invited artist. Whew! I'm tired just thinking about it all.

New Stencils

It's time for some new stencils, not because the old ones have worn out, although some are getting pretty thick with paint, but because I'm ready for something new. I certainly don't create new stencils as often as I do new paintings, but I do love the process and I enjoy thinking about how I'm going to incorporate them into new work. I'll be starting a new series that I'm trying to make a little bit more formal and I thought I'd start off with a Damask stencil. I don't usually go quite this intricate and it will be interesting to see how the small pieces hold up.

I've had the good fortune of being featured in one of etsy's emails and these little birds have been flying off the shelves. (That is, if there were shelves to fly off of). Funny what a little bit of advertising can do. I'm certainly grateful to the editor who chose me. I also had the good fortune of being asked to be a featured artist in the Ogden City arts festival this June. I haven't done any festivals in a while so it will be something fun to look forward to.

I'm used to having my images speak for themselves, but today I had to go be the image myself. Poems Art needed a new photograph of me and so I went in for a little photo shoot. I must admit, I hate to have my picture taken, but surprisingly, it wasn't bad at all. Hopefully there will be at least one good photo and if there is, I'll be sure to post it.

I've been very busy painting the scenery for my daughter's school play. These corn panels have taken about four hours each. Times that by seven and you've got A LOT of work. And that's just the tip of the iceburg. The Emerald City is 32 feet wide and 18 feet tall. The farmhouse has a detachable porch that spins during the hurricane. We've got a witch's castle and a wizard's chamber and of course there's Munchkinland. But it will all be worth it! Right?

Last week the Salt Lake Valley had a terrible inversion. For the most part the inversion is horribly depressing and has no redeeming qualities as it blocks out the sun with a very thick layer of smog. But one night last week the smog turned into fog, the kind that is often compared to split pea soup, and when we woke up in the morning everything was covered with a beautiful layer of crystals.

I have a new appreciation for the birds that flitter in and out of my backyard. This little starling perched up by the telephone wires for a moment the other day and held still long enough for me to snap this photo. I've been spending quite a bit of time in my yard with my camera strung around my neck. Last week the kids and I went to a local store, Backyard Birds, and stocked up on bird seed and a fancy new bird feeder, with the hopes that we can lure some new models to our yard. The seed disappears quickly, although I haven't managed as many great shots as I'd like.

Yes, I should be painting. But I'm not. I should be painting... but instead I'm playing around with all these photos that I can't stop taking. Not only am I spending all my time snapping pictures, but now I'm finding fun new ways to modify them. I really like the way these apples turned out. They look a bit like marble. Maybe not too great to bite into, but pretty neat to look at.

I have a new obsession. For Christmas our family got a beautiful new camera and I can't seem to put it down. This past weekend we took a trip to Idaho to visit family and the three and a half hour trip home flew by as I took shots of the landscape out the window.

The studio sale went very well thanks to all who came by. After the paintings and posters were all hung, my house felt festive and positively brimming with color, which makes me contimplate leaving them up all year. It's too bad that I have to send the paintings off so soon. As for the posters, I've been thinking that I might just have to use them as wall paper. That could be fun.

Studio Sale

As always, I'm just now getting around to planning a Studio Sale for this year. What would life be like if I actually planned things out in advance? I'm guessing that I'll probably never know. Is this a symptom of being artistic, or is that just the excuse I've gotten used to giving?

It's not easy to design a Christmas Card. Laurie, from Poems Art, asked if I would try painting up a design for their card this year. We thought it would be neat to paint it on vintage Christmas sheet music and although the idea was wonderful my interpretation might have fallen a bit flat. The first card that I designed was a bit too springy and the second just wasn't exactly what I'd envisioned. Maybe try number three will be magic.

Small Works Show

These little bird paintings are going to make their way to the small works show at Evergreen Gallery. I haven't quite figured out yet how I'm going to frame them. I think I'll try mounting them on panel so that they look similar to my floral paintings.
Last week I showed some to my publisher, Laurie, who took a few to photograph and possibly use in their next line. It would be a fun departure from my other paintings and I think the small size would be great for gifts. I'm also going to design the Christmas card for Poems Art in the same style. I'll be using vintage Christmas sheet music in the background. I'll post some photos once I finish it.

There is something much more intimate about painting on these poems than the way I traditionally paint on wood. Maybe it's just because the scale is so much smaller and it forces me to hold the page in my lap instead of up on the easel. I've been snuggling up on the couch with a pen and paper instead of staying down in my studio where I normally do all of my painting. This is great because I'm actually getting some work done later at night while I'm usually wasting time watching TV. Stay tuned for many more of these little paintings.

Gretchen from Poems Art, the art publisher that I LOVE, just let me know that a set director may be using A Warm Summer Day I & II in an upcoming film or possibly on television. Something must be in the air these days. I'm hoping whatever show that it's used in will actually be shown in the U.S. so I'll have the chance of seeing it.
I think in my next life I might like to be a set designer. When I was a kid, our house was used in a made for TV movie (The Man With Three Wives staring Beau Bridges and Pam Dawber). It was a pretty terrible movie, but watching them transform our house was pretty amazing.

This painting, which I originally painted for a friend, is currently being used in a German movie that is being filmed here in Utah. This is the third movie that has used some of my original paintings, yet I've yet to seen anything of mine on the big screen. Every once in a while I'll see something on TV, but I'm still waiting for that awesome moment on the silver screen.

A good friend of mine from high school got married this past weekend and this is the painting that I gave her for her wedding present. I'm always a little embarrassed to give a piece of art as a gift because it's a little presumptuous of me to assume that they'll want it, but I like knowing that my friends have a little piece of me in their homes, so they get it whether they like it or not.

I wouldn't say that I've become bored with my floral tapestries, but I have felt that they needed to move in a little bit of a different direction, so lately I've started incorporating images of birds into the mix. So far I've been both excited and perplexed by the process. It seems that it should be easy enough to integrate a bird into a painting of flowers, after all, the two are so often found together in art, but I found it to be a little bit more challenging than I had anticipated. Challenging yes, but exciting as well. Here is the painting that I worked on at the Vegas Market. The bird was very different while I was there and I've tweeked it alot since I got home. Vegas Market

Wow, they really do things big in Vegas. This past weekend Propac Images asked me to come to Vegas for the World Market trade show to paint live and sign limited edition prints. I thought I knew what to expect from a trade show, but this was no ordinary show. It was gigantic. The World Market in Vegas, where the event is housed, is comprised of four huge buildings (as tall as sixteen stories) all packed with showrooms on every floor. I had the chance to walk around a bit to look at some of the other showrooms, but even during my two hour tour I only made it through about one twentieth of what there was to see.

Something New

This piece is going to a show at Alpine Art that opens this Friday, August 21st. It's been a while since I've felt like I branched into something new and this painting feels fresh to me. I realize that it's still in the same vein of the genre that I've been working in for a long time, but I came about it at a different angle and the result is exciting to me. I'm hoping to get a good response from it because I'd like to paint more pieces that are similar to it.

My friends and family know that I'm a very fickle person, flitting from one project to another; one passion to the next. My poor art has been put on the back burner for the past couple of months as I've been working on some writing projects (my other art form). But not to worry, I finished the short story and the essay that I was writing for the Writers @ Work Fellowship contest that I enter every year and now I will hunker down and get back to working with brushes again.

This morning I awoke to a couple of inches of snow and large, white flakes have continued to fall all morning (I'm certainly not ready for the snow yet). I finally got around to painting something for my family room. I had to do some paintings for a gallery stroll that Paisley Pomegranate was being a part of, and it was a perfect excuse for me to paint this for myself. If I hadn't had that deadline I would have never gotten around to doing it. I still haven't painted a new painting for my living room since I gave away the piece that was hanging there to a friend of mine more than six months ago.

Blues have always been hard for me to paint. It's a picky color and sometimes it's hard to get right, but I really like the way this painting turned out. I painted it for a commission and hopefully it's well received. I'm thinking I might paint something similar for my living room. I have a bright blue fireplace and the oriental rug on my floor has bits of blue in it too. I think it will tie together really well. That is, if I ever get around to painting it.

For One Night Only

On Friday September 19th I'll be painting live at Alpine Art for the 25th Anniversary Open House at 7:00. I'm always a little nervous to paint in front of people that I don't know, but I'll have the painting three quarters of the way completed and will try to finish it up during the party. By this point I should have a very good idea what the end product will look like so it shouldn't be quite so scary. The painting above is one of the pieces that I will be displayed during the show.

It's been ages since I painted any landscapes, but on a recent trip to Idaho to visit my best friend Cathy I was so stirred by the farmland that I took a whole bunch of photographs to use for references so I could do a series of landscapes. I'm planning on using acrylic on paper. It's been so long since I've worked on paper and I'm excited by the prospect. Here is a phenomenal picture of the moon rising. The colors were amazing, bold, yet compressed. Ahhh!

I'm Back

Yes, after three months of distraction I've ended my sabbatical. There has to be something said for the benefit of a deadline and right now I'm very grateful to A Muse Gallery in Columbus for being just the impetus to get me off my keister and painting again. If you're near Columbus in October, stop by the gallery to see the show.
My kids are slated to start school next week and I'm excited to get back to the studio with some regularity again. Ahh, I didn't realize how much I missed having a schedule. I'm hoping to get new work out to all my galleries and finally make some progress with the figurative paintings I've been working on for a collective show that I'm preparing to do with my brother.

Mother's Day Show

I finally delivered eight paintings to Utah Artist Hands for the Mother's Day Show. Pam has a beautiful shop with an amazing eclectic mix of artwork that I would love to be able to buy. I'm always jealous of the people who go into a gallery with the intent to buy and I always feel a little guilty that I'm not one of those people more often. Most of the artwork in my house has been acquired through the beautiful act of trading. But it's a great feeling when I can actually pay an artist for her work.

Epiphany

I'm still getting ready for an upcoming show at an art gallery right here in Salt Lake, Utah Artist Hands. I'm still madly painting of course, but sometimes I think I do my best work at the last minute. This painting is one of a pair that will be up in the show opening in time for mother's day. I love the new color palette I used in these paintings. They're inspired by vintage, Art Deco fabric that I found in a new book.
My friends and family know that I'm easily distracted, an entrepreneur by heart, and I'm not really myself unless I have a new passion to follow up on every few months. This past weekend while at a beautiful fabric store with my sister Cathy I decided to finally follow through with the passion for textiles that I've had for years. In what you might call an epiphany I decided to start designing a line of fabrics based off of my paintings, which I suppose brings things full circle considering the fact that my paintings are inspired by textiles to begin with.

This piece, along with three others, are on their way to England. Liberty Gallery in Kent will be the first overseas gallery to display my paintings. Hopefully they find a happy home in England. Now if only I could hand deliver the paintings myself. Too bad my American dollar wouldn't get me too far.

Metaphor

I really struggled with these pieces. Sometimes a painting will just fall together, each stencil fitting in exactly the right spot, each flower the right size and color to begin with, and other times I feel like I'm fighting the whole time, exhausted at every decision, changing color and composition left and right until finally I end up too tired to paint any more. The funny thing is that it's usually these paintings that I end up liking the most in the long run, possibly because they were unexpected. They weren't the pieces I sought out to make, but were the paintings that struggled to form themselves out of the layers of paint, stencil and charcoal. No need to tell me that it's a metaphor for something larger. . .

This time lapse video shows the process of a stencil being made. First I drew the image on Bristol Board, referring to an image I had sketched in my sketch book. After I was happy with the shape I began cutting out the image with an Exacto Knife. Presto.

I was just about to mail this painting off, along with a few others, to Monsoon Gallery in Pennsylvania when the gallery director contacted me to let me know that they'd like to feature them in a floral show in May and June. I think the show might get some more red pieces to go along with this one.

I'm getting a group of paintings ready to mail off to Art Resources Gallery in Minnesota and have reached the stage in the painting process that I dread each and every time, framing and wiring. I have to admit that my husband actually cradles each of my paintings, but it's up to me to paint and varnish the edges, a task I would love to pawn off to one of my apprentices if only I had any.

I ended up really liking this painting. Every once in a while I'll have a painting come together very naturally and this was definitely one of those paintings. As I've said, I don't have a very big studio, and often during the middle of working on a painting I'll bring it into my family room where I have a little more room to step back and really get a feel for a piece. Another benefit to bringing a painting into the family room is the great input that I get from my family. They helped with the decision of adding the final layering of brown stencils which really made the painting feel complete.

I've got over thirty stencils, but I definitely have my favorites. And you can distinguish the favorites by the layers of paint which sometimes get so thick that I actually have to stop using a stencil because the built up paint has distorted the image. I usually don't just make one stencil at a time, although occasionally I'll feel that I just don't have the right one for a painting that I'm working on and then I'll make one with a specific painting in mind. Most of the time I'll make a few stencils at once. It's a very different process from painting and sometimes it's just the change of pace that I need. I make my stencils out of Bristol Board, which is thick enough to stand up to the paint, but thin enough that I won't lose all feeling in my fingers when I use my Exacto knife to cut out the design.

Anyone who knows me, and has come to spend time with me as I paint, knows that my studio is a cramped space, overflowing with used canvases and panels, tubes full of posters and containers of gesso and matte medium, not an ideal space to sit down to have a conversation, or to stay much longer than a few minutes to watch me finish a layer of stenciling. So I thought it might be fun to take my studio to the web, a place where my friends could sit down for a while and watch as some of my paintings emerge, without feeling snubbed by the fact that I can't offer a chair for them to sit on (the one in my studio being covered by gardening books and fabric catalogs).
